B'nai Israel Religious School

Our religious school, under the guidance of director, Angle Ellis, provides religious education for our children ages pre-school to Bar Mitzvah age. Here, they learn the rich history of the Jewish people, a love for the religion, the importance for keeping the traditions alive, and most important, a sense of pride for being Jewish. We have a very progressive religious school, offering a complete class syllabus and general program of study beginning with Kindergarten and culminating with the 7th grade year.

Congregation B'nai Israel Religious School uses The Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL) curriculum. The (ISJL) is a non-denominational organization based in Jackson, MS, dedicated to providing educational and rabbinic services to isolated Jewish communities, documenting and preserving the rich history of the southern Jewish experience, and promoting a Jewish cultural presence throughout a twelve state region. The curriculum begins in Early Childhood and goes through to the 9th/10th grade.

Our preschool meets once per month with a program coordinated by the parents of the preschool children. Each grade from K to 7 has textbooks and learning plans which instruct the students in a variety of topics, including Biblical study, historical concepts, life cycle events, Jewish customs, holidays, and festivals, and an in-depth study of Hebrew. Children in K-4 also receive music/art instruction.

At the onset of the 5th grade year, an additional Hebrew class is held once a week in the evening. Students who are studying for a Bar/Bat Mitzvah during the 7th grade year have individual study and preparation in addition to religious school. Religious school teachers are recruited from the many dedicated and knowledgeable members of our Congregation.

The Religious School is one of the main benefits for the members.

The Religious School meets on Sunday mornings from 10:00am to 12:30pm. We serve students PRE-K thru 10th grade. We also have classes for high school students in grades 8-10.

Bar and Bat Mitzvahs: The classes provide instructions for students preparing for Bar and Bat Mitzvah and Confirmation. The classes are conducted on Sunday mornings. In addition private scheduled tutoring is conducted throughout the week.

Hebrew School meets on Wednesdays at 6:30 PM. Hebrew is taught for students in school grades of 4-6.

Adult Torah classes are conducted, as necessary, to meet the demand. Various adult education classes are conducted throughout the year.
